Significance: |
Karthika Poornima is celebrated in Hindu temples on the day of Poornima (full moon) during the Karthika masam. This typically falls in the month of November. On this auspicious day of Poornima, lamps are lighted in the temple celebrating “Deepotsavam” The significance of the deepotsavam is that Bhagavan in the form of “Param Jyothi” with the lighted lamps will enlighten the universe and remove darkness and lead the path. This fact is substantiated in the Vedas as “ Narayana Parojyothi raatma narayanaha parah” The deepotsavam festival is also referred to in our Hindu temple practices as “Laksha Varthi Deepotsavam”, whereby lamps are lighted with 100,000 cotton wicks. |
|
This auspicious day is also noted for the birth celebrations of Sri Vrinda (Sri Lakshmi’s form), the personification of the Tulasi plant. Hindu women worship the Tulasi plant and participate in the Tulasi Kalyanam. It is believed that Sri Maha Lakshmi grants the devotees happiness, wealth and long life for the entire family. |
